Susanna (HWV 66)was written by Haendel in 1748, and its subject contrasts with the preceding oratorio,Joshua. It is based on the story of Susanna in chapter 13 of the book of Daniel in the Bible. The work was premiered in Covent garden in 1749. In the first performance, Joacim, Susanna's husband, is a "travesti" role by Alto Caterina Galli, it suits a Countertenor too. Susanna (Soprano), a virtuous young woman was falsely accused of sexual promiscuity by two elders of the community who lusted after her themselves. The prophet Daniel (Soprano/Boy Soprano) later exposes the two elders and vindicates Susanna.
